Venus is located between the Earth and the Sun, backlit only 2.4° from the
Sun. It's the sunlight refracted and diffused by the Venusian atmosphere
that makes the full atmospheric crescent appear.
Inferior conjunctions of
Venus occur every 19 months, but close conjunctions with the Sun occur every
8 years: 2012 (last solar transit), 2020, 2028...
